Giving Back to Hip-Hop Legends
Nas, Steve Stoute, and Ben Horowitz from Andreessen Horowitz are teaming up with Ben’s wife Felicia. They are celebrating Hip-Hop pioneers in a big way. They have launched the first-ever Hip Hop Grandmaster Awards. This special event will honor icons like Rakim and Scarface. It will also give back to the people who helped build Hip-Hop.
The awards are part of the Paid in Full Foundation. Here’s the best part: 100% of the money raised will help Hip-Hop legends and other creatives. These are people who didn’t get the credit or money they deserved.
On their website, the foundation says Hip-Hop started as a local movement in New York but grew into something huge worldwide. It gave people jobs, opportunities, and hope. But sadly, many of the original artists never got paid fairly or truly recognized.
The Paid in Full Foundation wants to help artists. They give grants and support so artists can keep doing what they love and live with dignity.
In a podcast interview, Stoute said they’re planning to give out $500,000 and health care to some of these pioneers. He also said this awards show will happen every year moving forward.
“What I really want is to help the artists who got bad deals or were taken advantage of,” Stoute said. “This is our way of saying thank you and making things right.”
Even though it lines up with Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday, this project has been in the works for two years. Nas, Horowitz, Fab 5 Freddy, Quincy Jones III, and others have been working behind the scenes to bring it to life.
The sold-out Hip Hop Grandmaster Awards will take place on November 17 in Las Vegas. It looks like a big moment for the culture. It’s one thing to put the spotlight on Hip-Hop culture, but it’s another to properly give its pioneers their dues.
