DOJ Investigating NBA Over Allegations of Anticompetitive Behavior Against Big 3 Sports League
The NBA is under scrutiny from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) over claims that it attempted to block the growth of Ice Cube’s Big Three sports league. The NBA has denied all allegations.
DOJ Probes NBA’s Alleged Interference with Big 3 Sports
According to TMZ Sports, the DOJ began investigating several months ago, looking into anticompetitive practices aimed at stifling the success of the Big 3 sports league. The allegations suggest that the NBA used its influence to discourage sponsors, television networks, and potential partners from supporting Big 3 sports.
Insiders claim the NBA also imposed restrictions that prevent current players from participating in Big Three sports during the offseason. The NBA and Big3 seasons do not overlap. Yet, reports indicate that players face barriers when they express interest in playing for Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 league.
NBA’s Alleged Attempts to Limit Big 3 Sports Growth
Big3 officials argue that the league has been unfairly targeted. Sources say the NBA discouraged team owners from investing in Big Three sports while simultaneously owning an NBA franchise. Even referees have allegedly been told they cannot officiate Big 3 sports games, despite working for other non-NBA leagues.
Ice Cube and his business partner, Jeff Kwatinetz, met with DOJ lawyers earlier this year. Since then, investigators have reportedly reached out to NBA owners as part of the probe.
Potential Consequences for the NBA
If the government finds that the NBA violated antitrust laws, the league could face significant penalties.
When asked for comment, NBA spokesman Mike Bass dismissed the allegations. He stated, “Those claims are not true. We have supported Big Three sports since its inception but declined to invest.”
The U.S. Department of Justice and Big 3 sports officials declined to comment on the investigation.
